Summative Test

There will be a summative text on Wednesday Sept. 26th.

You will be responsible for all the material we covered so far this term.

Topics include:
  • Elements and Principles of Design
  • Perspective
  • Colour Theory
  • Art of the Renaissance P. 352-385
  • Art of 16th Century Europe P. 394-406
  • Compare and contrast two different works.
This covers all the readings and handouts I've assigned so far.  Completing the questions in the handouts will be a great way to prepare.

Sept. 26 Class

Learning Goals: Understand colour theory and use colours to effectively convey an emotion.

Today I discussed colour theory.  Here is a website that offers a good summary:

Here is another website that offers a fun app to play around with different colour schemes that designers might use to pick colours for websites:

I gave a handout as a summary and an assignment for you to practice using water colour and applying colour schemes.  The assignment is to paint Edvard Munch's The Scream, but expressing a different emotion.

Handouts:
I also gave handouts that discussed what colour is as well as colour's symbolism in different cultures.

Handouts:
Completing the question sheet will help you on your test next week!

Sept. 25 Class

Today we completed our discussion of the Renaissance.  I told the story of the theft of the Mona Lisa and we looked at Michelangelo's Last Judgement.

We then discussed art from Northern Europe, particularly the Flemish painter Jan van Eyck.  He created intensely detailed works using oil paints which were newly developed at the time.  We looked a few pieces of work including the following:

We also discussed a test next week that will cover all this material.  The test will be on Wednesday, October 3.

Here is a review sheet of terms and artists that you should know for the test.

Tomorrow we begin to talk about colour and using water colour paints.

Homework: Read pages 394 - 406 in your textbook.

Sept. 24 Class

Learning Goals: Use expressive lines to evoke emotions.

Today we continued to work with pen and ink.  We used different kinds of lines to evoke emotions using this worksheet.

Handout: Emotional Lines

In each box you had to use lines to express the emotion given.  In the last box, you were to come up with your own emotion.

For art history we will be wrapping up the Renaissance period with readings about the Renaissance in northern Europe.

Homework: Read P. 378 - 385

Sept. 21 Class

Learning Goals:

  • Be able to depict different values and textures using ink.
  • Understand how the use of line can convey different emotions.
Today the perspective drawings were due.  Those who have not handed them in yet, you must do so first thing Monday!

By today most of you have already had a good start on using ink.  In the next activity I will challenge all of you to use the ink to draw lines depicting different emotions.  The lines could be representational or abstract.

Here are a few examples of different ways to use lines:

Look at the different kinds of lines used here in this image from the Dragon Ball series.  Some are soft and glowing, others are more sharp and harsh.  What kind of ideas do the lines convey?  Speed?  Power?  Energy?

Here is a completely different use of lines in the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic series.  These lines are more organic, rounded and have many curves.  Look at the lines in Pinky Pie's mane.  They vary in thickness making her hair feel frizzy.  What feelings do these lines convey?  Joy?  Delight?  Playfulness?

Next we looked at Picasso's Don Quixote.  How do these lines differ from those above?  Does the horse in this drawing feel the same as the horses in My Little Pony?

Next is a painting by Miro called "Cat Encircled by the flight of a Bird".  Besides having an awesome title, the piece also has excellent use of lines.  How do you think the cat feels?  Is it calm and meditative or is it excited, confused and frantic?  What emotion do these lines convey?

nuit blanche coming up!

Make sure you check out nuit blanche coming up at the end of this month!

Sept. 20 Class

Learning Goals: Improve our abilities to describe pieces of artwork using the elements and principles of design.

Today I handed back some descriptions that people wrote about the postcards from yesterday.  I cut up the descriptions and hid the names of the artists.  Then you had to match the descriptions with the correct post cards.  Some were easy to match up, others were more ambiguous.  If people described them well, the task should be easy!  I hope you all enjoyed this activity and got to see different ways of describing art.

Next we discussed the solutions to the formative quiz.

Then I discussed how to use pen and ink.  Your first task will be to fill these boxes with different textures to create different values.

We will be working in ink for our next drawing, after that we will move into colour.  Exciting!

Sept. 19 Class

Learning Goals: Improve our ability to describe pieces of art work.

Today I wanted to give you guys more practice on discussing the elements and principles of art.  Each of us picked a famous piece of artwork and then used the following format to describe them,

Handout: Describing Pieces of Art

The chart on this handout can also be found in your text book (page 46) and an explanation of how to use it can be found on page 88.  If you forget any of the definitions check page 26 or page 40.

The goal of this exercise is to be able to use our vocabular of elements and principles to describe artwork in detail.  These will not be marked, but I will give you comments on  your descriptions.  This is an important step in the critical analysis process.  We must first be able to describe art before we can interpret it and eventually to evaluate it.

Homework: Complete your perspective drawings!  They are still due on Friday.

Sept. 18 Class

Today we did a formative quiz on the readings from the Renaissance.  I will get them back to you in a couple of days.

We then spent the remainder of the class continuing with your perspective drawings.  These drawings will be due on Friday, but your class time to work on them will be very limited after today.  anyone not finished will need to completed as homework and submitted on Friday.

Sept. 17 Class

Today we had a work period for you to work on your perspective drawing assignments.  Everyone should have their spaces planned out at this point and start working on putting your organic forms into your space.  I've seen great starts so far, good work everyone!

I will have a short formative quiz at the beginning of class tomorrow on the Renaissance to make sure you're keeping up with your readings.

Sept. 14 Class

Learning Goals: Understand the rules of perspective and effective use them to create a drawing with depth.

Today I gave more details on the perspective drawing assignment and the marking scheme.

Handout: Perspective Drawing Assignment

Then I discussed some examples of how the artsist in the Renaissance made excellent use of perspective in their works.

Here is a collection of the pieces I talked about.  You should understand how and why linear perspective was used in these works.

Masaccio.  The Tribute Money.  c. 1427
Masaccio. The Holy Trinity.  c. 1428
Leonardo da Vinci.  The Last Supper. c. 1498
Rapheal.  The School of Athens. 1511

I also took some time to discuss how perspective was used in other ways.  Have a look at these pieces and see if you can compare and contrast the differences in how perspective was used.

Readings: P. 361 - 375, P. 228

Sept. 13 Class

Learning Goals: Understand the innovations of the Renaissance period, particularly the development of linear perspective.

Today we finished up the critique of the popcorn drawings.  Thank you all for participating, both in showing your work and in providing feedback for others.

I asked that everyone fill out one of these forms and submit it with your work.

Popcorn drawing critique

Next we discussed some of the readings from yesterday on the Renaissance.  We discussed the idea of humanism and how it influenced the work of artists.  We also focused on the rules of perspective discovered by Brunelleschi and used by many artists afterwards.  I then discussed what some of these rules were.  You can download and review the powerpoint as well as the handout here:

Rules of linear perspective powerpoint

Handout on linear perspective

I then presented you with the challenge of creating a drawing using two point perspective.  Each of you were to go around the school and find a location to draw.  Your drawing must use two point perspective to create a realistic, recognizable space with depth.  Secondly, you must put at least one organic object into this space.  It could be a person, animal or inanimate object from your own imagination, but it must sit realistically in that space.

Homework for today is to find the space that you wish to draw and start a preliminary sketch.

Sept. 12 Class

Learning Goals: Self and peer assessment of popcorn drawings.

Today we did a critique of the popcorn drawings.  Everyone was asked to state what worked well about their own work and what could be improved.  Then we as a class discussed what worked well and what could be improved in everyone's work.  We didn't get  a chance to discuss everyone's work, so we will continue with this process tomorrow.

I also took some time to distribute our text books for this course!  The book is Art in Focus.  You can find a link to the publisher's site with more resources her:

Here are some great pages for reference
  • P. 26 Elements of Art
  • P. 40 Principles of Art

For tomorrow, please read P. 354 - 360, Emergence of the Renaissance.

Tuesday, 11 September 2012

Sept. 11 Class

Learning Goals: Review the elements and principles of design.

Today I gave some time for everyone to complete the popcorn drawings.  The critique will then be moved to tomorrow, so for those who are not done the second drawing yet, please have that completed for first thing tomorrow.

In the remainder of the class I reviewed what the elements and principle of design are.  Here is the powerpoint that I presented.

Elements and Principles of Design Powerpoint

The challenge in grade 11 will be to use these elements and principles to express emotion and your personal feelings.  We will talk more about this in the coming days.

Homework:

  • Complete the second popcorn drawing.
  • Bring in the course fee and signed forms if you have not yet done so.

Monday, 10 September 2012

Sept. 10 Class

Learning Goals: Understand the creative process.

Today we continued with the popcorn drawing assignment.  In the second drawing, you are challenged to create an image inspired by our first drawing.  The creative process is a guideline of steps that will take you through this process of creation, from the initial inspiration to imagining, planning, experimenting, producing, revising, presenting and finally evaluating your work.

What if you are stuck and can't think of where to go next?  I provided a handout of "The Synectic Trigger Mechanisms".

These are key words and concepts that you can use to help you take one idea and expand on it in a variety of ways to generate something new.  Think about these synectic triggers when you feel stumped for an idea.

Remember, we are aiming to have a critique of the popcorn drawings tomorrow.

Friday, 7 September 2012

Sept. 7 Class

Today we continued with the discussion of what is art.  I completed this powerpoint presentation which you can download at this link:

These are ideas we will continue to discuss throughout the course.

We then continued with our popcorn drawing.  Most of you have a great start on the first drawing and some are ready to continue onto the second drawing.  We will have some more class time on Monday to complete the drawings and I hope we can move onto a critique of them on Tuesday.

Sept. 6 Class: What is Art?

We began our class today by talking about what is art?  We watched this video created by a student:

Then we had a discussion of whether or not we agreed with the video.  I heard some great arguments on either side.  These are ideas that we will keep in mind and revisit throughout the course.

Next I challenged you to create art out of a piece of popcorn.  This brings us to our first project.

We had a good start on our drawings and will continue with them tomorrow.
