Summative Test

There will be a summative text on Wednesday Sept. 26th.

You will be responsible for all the material we covered so far this term.

Topics include:

• Elements and Principles of Design
• Perspective
• Colour Theory
• Art of the Renaissance P. 352-385
• Art of 16th Century Europe P. 394-406
• Compare and contrast two different works.

This covers all the readings and handouts I've assigned so far.  Completing the questions in the handouts will be a great way to prepare.

Sept. 26 Class

Learning Goals: Understand colour theory and use colours to effectively convey an emotion.

Today I discussed colour theory.  Here is a website that offers a good summary:

I gave a handout as a summary and an assignment for you to practice using water colour and applying colour schemes.  The assignment is to paint Edvard Munch's The Scream, but expressing a different emotion.

Sept. 25 Class

Today we completed our discussion of the Renaissance.  I told the story of the theft of the Mona Lisa and we looked at Michelangelo's Last Judgement.

We then discussed art from Northern Europe, particularly the Flemish painter Jan van Eyck.  He created intensely detailed works using oil paints which were newly developed at the time.  We looked a few pieces of work including the following:

We also discussed a test next week that will cover all this material.  The test will be on Wednesday, October 3.

Sept. 24 Class

Learning Goals: Use expressive lines to evoke emotions.

Today we continued to work with pen and ink.  We used different kinds of lines to evoke emotions using this worksheet.

In each box you had to use lines to express the emotion given.  In the last box, you were to come up with your own emotion.

For art history we will be wrapping up the Renaissance period with readings about the Renaissance in northern Europe.

Sept. 21 Class

Learning Goals:

• Be able to depict different values and textures using ink.
• Understand how the use of line can convey different emotions.

Today the perspective drawings were due.  Those who have not handed them in yet, you must do so first thing Monday!

By today most of you have already had a good start on using ink.  In the next activity I will challenge all of you to use the ink to draw lines depicting different emotions.  The lines could be representational or abstract.

Here are a few examples of different ways to use lines:

Look at the different kinds of lines used here in this image from the Dragon Ball series.  Some are soft and glowing, others are more sharp and harsh.  What kind of ideas do the lines convey?  Speed?  Power?  Energy?

Here is a completely different use of lines in the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic series.  These lines are more organic, rounded and have many curves.  Look at the lines in Pinky Pie's mane.  They vary in thickness making her hair feel frizzy.  What feelings do these lines convey?  Joy?  Delight?  Playfulness?

Next we looked at Picasso's Don Quixote.  How do these lines differ from those above?  Does the horse in this drawing feel the same as the horses in My Little Pony?

Next is a painting by Miro called "Cat Encircled by the flight of a Bird".  Besides having an awesome title, the piece also has excellent use of lines.  How do you think the cat feels?  Is it calm and meditative or is it excited, confused and frantic?  What emotion do these lines convey?

Sept. 20 Class

Learning Goals: Improve our abilities to describe pieces of artwork using the elements and principles of design.

Today I handed back some descriptions that people wrote about the postcards from yesterday.  I cut up the descriptions and hid the names of the artists.  Then you had to match the descriptions with the correct post cards.  Some were easy to match up, others were more ambiguous.  If people described them well, the task should be easy!  I hope you all enjoyed this activity and got to see different ways of describing art.

Next we discussed the solutions to the formative quiz.

Then I discussed how to use pen and ink.  Your first task will be to fill these boxes with different textures to create different values.
